Retired police sergeant William “Bill” Gibson, 86, of Hamden, CT died peacefully at his home on Saturday, February 14, 2026 surrounded by his family, and after a courageous battle with cancer. Bill was born in New Haven, CT on March 29, 1939, a son of the late Charles and Elizabeth (Tessmer) Gibson, and was a thirty six year veteran of the Hamden Police Department, spearheading the implementation of the town’s modern 911 emergency response communications system. In addition to enjoying time spent with family, Bill was a talented craftsman, a sports enthusiast, had a passion for trains, and loved a good steak.
He is survived by his wife of forty one years, Judith (Keyes) Gibson, two sons, Matthew C. Gibson and Michael W. (Jill) Gibson of Hamden, three daughters Catherine A. Gibson of Hyannis, MA, Susan M. (John) Zadrozny of Glastonbury, and Carloyn J. Gibson of North Haven, nine grandchildren, Joshua, Jacleen, Jonathan, Mark, Kevin, Josalyn, Johnny, Charlie and Crosby, and sixteen great-grandchildren. Bill was predeceased by his daughter Mary Ellen “Emmy” Riccio, three sisters, Lucille Borsari, Lorraine Borsari and Blanche Maines, and his grandson Joey.
Bill’s family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, February 20th from 12:00 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home at 2:30 with a Christian burial to follow in St. Mary Cemetery, Hamden. www.washingtonmemorialfh.com
