Sonia María Famania Aviles, 81, of New Haven, CT died peacefully on Wednesday, February 25, 2026 at Yale-New Haven Hospital, York St. Campus with her loving family by her side. Sonia was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico on December 16, 1944, a daughter of the late Halario Famania and the late Luz María Aviles and had resided in New Haven for the past thirty one years.
Sonia enjoyed her novelas, and engaging in conversation with others. She had a keen sense of humor, loved to laugh, had a strong will, and above all had a deep love for her family.
She is survived by three daughters, Carmen Villa Famania and Katherine Villa Famania of New Haven, six sons, Jorge Famania Villa of Rincón, Puerto Rico, Hector (Carmen) Famania Villa of Añasco, Puerto Rico, and Angel, Francis, Mario and Jason (Maritza Rodríguez) Famania Villa of New Haven, five sisters, Maria, Aida, and Enoelia Famania Aviles of New Haven, Lydia Famania Aviles of Meriden and Eneida Famania Aviles of Añasco, Puerto Rico, three brothers, Jaime Famania Aviles of Añasco, Milton (Angela) Famania Aviles of Hartford and Edwin Famania Aviles of Meriden, twenty one grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by a sister, Isabel Famania Aviles and two brothers, Tony and Wichy Famania Aviles.
Funeral services for Sonia are private, and have been entrusted to the Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven. washingtonmemorialfh.com
