Richard Widmayer Obituary

Richard Charles Widmayer, aged 57 of Hamden, CT, passed away on Tuesday, June 11, 2024. He is predeceased by his loving parents, Frank and Jeanne Widmayer (nee Arnold), and his only sister, Allison Widmayer-Search.

He is survived by his wife, M. Elaine Whalen-Widmayer, four sisters-in-law, Sheila Deslaurier, Josephine Whalen, Sara Whalen, and Stacy Whalen-Kelley, five nieces, Kaj-Hart Frasier, Tiffany Holden, Ashley Holden, Rory Kelley, and Lilli Kelley, five nephews, Keith Frasier, Kent Frasier, Cameron Deslaurier, Nathan Duffy, and Matthew Duffy, as well as eight great nieces and nephews.

Richard was adopted as an infant and could not have been more treasured by his parents. He often spoke of his relationship with his father, who passed away when Rich was nine years old. They had a very special and close bond. He taught Rich to fish, and they went to the Long Island Firemen Tournament each year in early June. As an adult, Rich went to the Tournament as often as he could, bought a beer, and drank a toast to his dad. He continued fishing, going out on boats at Captree whenever he could.

His family had a favorite vacation spot on Montauk on Long Island. They went at least once a year and had many special friends there. It became a second home.

Rich’s early work was for the family-owned florist close to his home, first selling flowers, then delivering them. He loved watching the delight on customers’ faces when they saw the arrangements he brought them. Later, Rich worked with his hands as a machinist: and embroiderer: He was particularly proud to have helped with military tanks, as well as elevators and other industrial equipment.

He met the love of his life, Elaine, in 2010, and found great joy in introducing her to favorite parts of his childhood, including beloved trips to Montauk. They had an instant connection that only grew stronger and deeper over time. He fell in love with her cooking, especially her lasagna and sweet potato casserole. He loved family gatherings during which he became a treasured member of Elaine’s family. They settled in Hamden and extended their family by adopting four beautiful furbaby rescues.

Rich loved color and fire, so it’s no surprise that lighting and watching fireworks were favorite activities. His neighbors looked forward to his small fireworks shows every Fourth of July. He also loved setting off fireworks in the snow. Any occasion was a good occasion for fireworks.

He loved all kinds of games, including DnD, which he got to play with his niece, Lillie, and nephew Cameron, sharing models and memorabilia with them. He was also a chess champion, and loved to play with members of his extended family.

Music and concerts were central to Rich’s life. He enjoyed an eclectic mix of genres, his favorite being Pink Floyd, and The Wall had special meaning for him. He loved movies, especially King-Fu, sci-fi/fantasy, and black and white movies, and was a particular fan of Buster Keaton. He also loved musicals, a love he shared with his mom.

Rich leaves behind a legacy woven with kindness, humor, and unwavering love. His family, friends, and all who knew him are invited to celebrate his life and honor the memories that forever resonate in our hearts. Rich’s journey may have reached its end, but the light of his spirit will continue to guide those who were privileged to share in his life’s journey.
