Ricardo Vélez, 36, of Wilmington, NC, formerly of New Haven, CT died suddenly at his home on Tuesday, January 9, 2024. Ricardo was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico on July 17, 1987, a son of the Lillian Mejias of St. Cloud, FL and Ricardo Vélez of San Sebastián, Puerto Rico. He had lived in New Haven for most of his life, and Guilford for seven years before moving to Wilmington two years ago. While living in New Haven he attended Eli Whitney Regional Technical High School of Hamden and worked at Paul Francis. He later worked for several auto body shops as well as Ram Technologies of Guilford. He was a construction worker at LaFata and Sons, and most recently worked for Coastal Chemical and Paper of Wilmington. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his step-father Edgar Nieves of St. Cloud, his step-mother Sonia Crespo of San Sebastián, his life partner Melissa Kellogg, two sons, Cameron Kellogg and Ricardo "Ricky" Vélez of Hampstead, NC, four sisters, Jessica (Julio Pena) Vélez of Milford, CT, Veronica (Hugo Orellana) Vélez of West Haven, CT, Bonni Bell Vélez of Douglas, GA, and Lilybeth (Marcus) Johnson of Pennsylvania. He is also survived by many loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Ricardo had a love for cars, a passion for baseball and enjoyed fishing with his family. His laugh was contagious, and his funny personality would light up a room. He was a loving father, son, brother, uncle and friends who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Ricardo's family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, January 26th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home during visitation time. Burial will be private.washingtonmemorialfh.com
