Maria Selim, 90 of North Haven, Connecticut died peacefully on Sunday, May 10, 2026 at her home with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Nilo Regueiro. Maria was born in Guantanamo, Cuba on June 6, 1935, a daughter of the late Diego Selim and the late Encarnación Loforte. She moved to Windsor, Canada in 1999, then resided in New Haven for fourteen years before moving to North Haven eleven years ago.
Maria was the best mother, wife, aunt, grandmother, and mother-in-law. She was truly an amazing woman. She took care of everyone around her, always putting others first. When Maria was able, she cooked for the entire family, filling the home not just with food, but with warmth and love. She loved to sing, especially older songs, the kind that stayed with you long after you heard them. Her voice was comforting, familiar, and full of life. As Maria got older, she found joy in simple things-reading, singing, and doing puzzles. Those quiet moments showed her strength and her peaceful spirit. She was the heart of the family and her love will always stay with them.
Maria is survived by one son, Moises (Adis) Regueiro of New Haven, five daughters, Amini (Juan) Otero of Titusville, FL, Amiri (Carlos) Hamud of Guantanamo, Cuba, Mayra Regueiro of Cooper City, FL, Marisel (Luís Luque) Regueiro of North Haven and Maria Antonia (Alejandro Leyva) Regueiro of New Haven, one brother, Emilio (Lourdes Lueso) Selim of Guantanamo, one sister, Reyna Selim of Mayari, Cuba, fourteen grandchildren, twenty one great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her brother Osmen Selim.
Maria’s funeral arrangements are private, and have been entrusted to the Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven. www.washingtonmemorialfh.com
