Juan Humberto Sil

Juan Humberto Sil, 71, of Hamden, Connecticut died peacefully on Wednesday, June 3, 2026 at the John Dempsey Hospital, University of Connecticut, Farmington with his loving family by his side. Born November 3rd, 1954 to the late Jesús Sil and the late Dominga González and raised in Guatemala City, he came from humble beginnings. From an early age, he showed leadership through his athleticism and passion for soccer. As a young boy, Juan brought people together by organizing neighborhood tournaments and spending countless hours on the field. School never captured his heart the way soccer did. He lived for the game, and he was exceptionally talented often earning money for every goal he scored.

At the age of 16, his mother decided it was time to redirect his future. She pulled him by the ear and said, “You don’t want to go to school, you don’t want a real job, all you want to do is play soccer. Let’s go I’m taking you somewhere.” She brought him to a local upholstery shop and spoke to the owner, Chino Varillas. She said, “Here is my son. Please teach him. You don’t have to pay him, just teach him. He’s smart, a fast learner, but he’s wasting time playing soccer. He’s creative and needs to work with his hands.”

Chino was tough and demanding. Juan began by cleaning the shop and running errands while carefully observing everything around him. Slowly, Chino taught him about fabrics, measurements, tools, and how to dismantle furniture by removing staples piece by piece. Over time, Juan developed a true passion for the craft. Eventually, Chino trusted him enough to teach him how to cut fabric and sew. He taught Juan precision, discipline, pride in workmanship, and the importance of delivering quality. If Juan made a mistake, Chino would often make him start all over again. Through those lessons, Juan developed the perfectionism and dedication that would later define his work.

What began as a lesson became a lifelong gift. Juan mastered his craft and became known simply as “The Master.” His work spoke for itself. If you walk into almost any marina in Connecticut, chances are they know his name.

At the age of 27, Juan joined the fire academy as a volunteer firefighter. Fear was never something that lived within him. He was agile, fast, strong, and courageous. He never hesitated to run into danger, climbing trees, buildings, and bridges, or entering burning homes to save lives. To many, he was a hero.

Juan deeply loved the ocean, the seas, rivers, lakes, and ponds. If there was water nearby, he never missed an opportunity to jump in. He was a strong swimmer and felt at peace near the water. For many years, he dreamed about the oceans and opportunities that existed in the United States. At the age of 29, he embarked on the journey to the land of the brave and the home of the free.

Juan was blessed to be raised in a Christian home by a devoted mother who prayed, fasted, and praised God faithfully every day. Though he did not initially dedicate his life to God, the seeds of faith had already been planted in his heart.

At the age of 40, Hermano Flores invited Juan to Star of Jacob for a church anniversary celebration where Pedrito sang. During that service, Juan experienced something overwhelming and life-changing, a feeling that could only be described as the presence of the Holy Spirit. In that moment, he decided to fully surrender his heart and soul to Christ.

From then on, Juan devoted himself wholeheartedly to God. He began reading the Bible faithfully, praying constantly, and seeking the presence of the Holy Spirit. He wanted others to experience the same love, peace, and transformation he had found. He became a loyal servant of God, touching lives throughout his community and guiding many people toward faith. Although writing did not come easily to him, he attended Biblical School for four years and graduated with determination and pride. He gained wisdom and shared that knowledge with everyone he encountered.

Juan was spontaneous, adventurous, and full of dreams and ideas. He loved music, especially Classic Rock, and the speakers were always loud. He danced whenever he had the chance, loved to laugh, and carried joy wherever he went. He was never grumpy and never held grudges. He loved deeply in his own way, not always through words, but through actions, memories, generosity, and presence.

He was a loyal soldier, a humble servant, a devoted husband, a loving father, a caring brother, and a true friend.

On June 3, 2026, God called home an exemplary man whose love, courage, faith, and spirit will continue to live on in all who knew and loved him.

Juan is survived by his wife of forty five years Julia Morales Torres, two daughters, Yuli (Rene) Chacón of Hamden and Priscila Sil of Wallingford, a son, Jimmy (Melissa Calderón) of Tampa, FL,  three sisters, Marta Mateo, Elisa (David Callegas) Mateo and Roselia Mateo and two brothers, Carlos (Aura) Mateo and Ruben Mateo, all of Guatemala City, eight grandchildren, Kylianny Chacón, Alexis Chacón, Adeliz Chacón, Jamilette Sil Soto, Eden Sil, José Carión Tatiana Calderón and Amarae Rosario, three great-grandchildren, Jovanny Ocasio, Avianny Ocasio and Carmela Chacón, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Juan's family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, June 8th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven.  A funeral service will take place at the funeral home during visitation time. Burial will be private. washingtonmemorialfh.com

Nacido el 3 de Noviembre del 1954 de los fallecidos Jesús Sil y Dominga González, y criado en la Ciudad de Guatemala, creció con orígenes humildes. Desde muy temprana edad demostró liderazgo a través de su atletismo y su pasión por el fútbol. De joven, Juan reunía a las personas organizando torneos en su vecindario y pasando incontables horas en la cancha. La escuela nunca logró conquistar su corazón como lo hizo el fútbol. Vivía para el juego y tenía un talento excepcional; muchas veces le pagaban por cada gol que anotaba.

A los 16 años, su madre decidió tomar el control de su futuro. Lo tomó de la oreja y le dijo: “No quieres ir a la escuela, no quieres un trabajo de verdad, todo lo que quieres es jugar fútbol. Vamos, te voy a llevar a un lugar.” Lo llevó a un taller local de tapicería y habló con el dueño, Chino Varillas. Ella le dijo “Aquí está mi hijo. Por favor enséñele. No tiene que pagarle, solo enséñele. Es inteligente, aprende rápido, pero está perdiendo el tiempo jugando fútbol. Es creativo y necesita trabajar con las manos.”

Chino era estricto y exigente. Juan comenzó limpiando el taller y haciendo mandados mientras observaba cuidadosamente todo a su alrededor. Poco a poco, Chino le enseñó sobre las telas, las medidas, las herramientas y cómo desarmar muebles quitando grapas pieza por pieza. Con el tiempo, Juan desarrolló una verdadera pasión por el oficio. Eventualmente, Chino confió en él lo suficiente para enseñarle a cortar tela y coser. Le enseñó precisión, disciplina, orgullo por su trabajo y la importancia de entregar calidad. Si Juan cometía un error, Chino muchas veces lo hacía comenzar desde cero. A través de esas lecciones, Juan desarrolló el perfeccionismo y la dedicación que más adelante definirían su trabajo.

Lo que comenzó como una enseñanza se convirtió en un don para toda la vida. Juan perfeccionó su oficio y llegó a ser conocido simplemente como “El Maestro”. Su trabajo hablaba por sí solo. Si usted entra a casi cualquier marina en Connecticut, probablemente conocen su nombre.

A los 27 años, Juan ingresó a la academia de bomberos como voluntario. El miedo nunca habitó en él. Era ágil, rápido, fuerte y valiente. Nunca dudaba en correr hacia el peligro — escalando árboles, edificios y puentes, o entrando a hogares en llamas para salvar vidas. Para muchos, fue un héroe.

Juan amaba profundamente el océano, los mares, los ríos, los lagos y las lagunas. Si había agua cerca, nunca perdía la oportunidad de lanzarse a ella. Era un excelente nadador y encontraba paz cerca del agua. Durante muchos años soñó con los océanos y las oportunidades que existían en los Estados Unidos. A los 29 años emprendió el viaje hacia la tierra de los valientes y el hogar de la libertad.

Juan fue bendecido al crecer en un hogar cristiano, guiado por una madre devota que oraba, ayunaba y alababa a Dios fielmente todos los días. Aunque inicialmente no dedicó su vida a Dios, las semillas de la fe ya habían sido sembradas en su corazón.

A los 40 años, el Hermano Flores invitó a Juan a Star of Jacob para un aniversario de la iglesia donde cantó Pedrito. Durante aquel servicio, Juan experimentó algo abrumador y transformador — una sensación que solo podía describirse como la presencia del Espíritu Santo. En ese momento decidió entregar completamente su corazón y su alma a Cristo.

Desde entonces, Juan se dedicó por completo a Dios. Comenzó a leer la Biblia fielmente, a orar constantemente y a buscar la presencia del Espíritu Santo. Quería que otros experimentaran el mismo amor, paz y transformación que él había encontrado. Se convirtió en un siervo fiel de Dios, tocando vidas en su comunidad y guiando a muchas personas hacia la fe. Aunque escribir no le resultaba fácil, asistió a la Escuela Bíblica durante cuatro años y se graduó con determinación y orgullo. Adquirió sabiduría y compartió ese conocimiento con cada persona que conocía.

Juan era espontáneo, aventurero y lleno de sueños e ideas. Amaba la música, especialmente el Classic Rock, y las bocinas siempre estaban a todo volumen. Bailaba en cualquier oportunidad, amaba reír y llevaba alegría dondequiera que iba. Nunca fue gruñón ni guardó rencor. Amaba profundamente a su manera — no siempre con palabras, sino con acciones, recuerdos, generosidad y presencia.

Fue un soldado leal, un siervo humilde, un esposo devoto, un padre amoroso, un hermano querido y un verdadero amigo.

El 3 de junio de 2026, Dios llamó a casa a un hombre ejemplar cuyo amor, valentía, fe y espíritu continuarán viviendo en todos aquellos que tuvieron el privilegio de conocerlo y amarlo.

Juan le sobrevive su esposa de cuarenta y cinco años, Julia Morales Torres, dos hijas, Yuli (Rene) Chacón de Hamden y Priscila Sil de Wallingford, un hijo, Jimmy (Melissa Calderón) Sil de Tampa, FL, tres hermanas, Marta Mateo, Elisa (David Callegas) Mateo y Roselia Mateo y dos hermanos, Carlos (Aura) Mateo y Rubén Mateo, todos de Ciudad Guatemala, ocho nietos, Kylianny Chacón, Alexis Chacón, Adeliz Chacón, Jamilette Sil Soto, Eden Sil, José Carión, Tatiana Calderón y Amarae Rosario, tres bisnietos, Jovanny Ocasio, Avianny Ocasio y Carmela Chacón, y muchos sobrinas, sobrinos, primos y amigos que lo aman.

La familia de Juna recibirá a parientes y amigos el lunes 8 de junio de 6:00 a 8:00 p.m. en la Funeraria Washington Memorial, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven. Un servicio fúnebre se llevará a cabo en la funeraria durante el tiempo de visita. El entierro será privado. washingtonmemorialfh.com
