James B. Vercellone, 84, of North Haven, CT died peacefully on Friday, August 9, 2024 at Yale-New Haven Hospital, St. Raphael Campus with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of fifty eight years to Carole (Norko) Vercellone. Jim was born in Poughkeepsie, NY on May 27, 1940, a son of the late Peter and Mary (Gabbianelli) Vercellone and had resided in North Haven for the past fifty five years. He was a math teacher at Nathan Hale-Ray High School, Moodus for two years, and then taught at Hamden High School for thirty three years, retiring in 1999. After retiring, Jim tutored students at Bishop Woods Magnet School, New Haven for many years. Jim also worked at the former Macy’s, New Haven Department Store for twenty three years. He attended Yale University and graduated from Southern Connecticut State College in 1964, and received his Master’s Degree in Arts and Liberal Studies from Wesleyan University in 1969. Jim loved to work in his vegetable garden, and after retirement he and Carole traveled extensively. He loved sports, and was an avid NY Yankees and UConn Men’s Basketball fan.
In addition to his wife Carole, Jim is survived by a daughter, Deborah (Jack) Prendergast of Berlin, two sons, David (Lisa) Vercellone of Southwick, MA and Jon Vercellone of New Haven, three grandchildren, Olivia Vercellone and Alexa and Leah Prendergast, nieces and nephews Mary (Michael) Mecca, Robert (Tara) Vercellone, and Amanda and Michael Vercellone, and sister-in-law Adeline Vercellone of North Haven. He was predeceased by his grandson Dominic Vercellone and brothers Peter and Robert Vercellone.
Jim’s family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, August 15th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven. His funeral cortege will depart the funeral home on Friday, August 16th at 9:30 a.m. for a Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. in St. Frances Cabrini Church (St. Elizabeth of the Trinity Parish), Pond Hill Rd., North Haven. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven. Memorial contributions in Jim’s name may be sent to Tunnels to Towers, P.O.
