Heroito “Oreo” Vélez, 59, of Wallingford, CT, formerly of New Haven, CT died peacefully at Yale-New Haven Hospital, York St. Campus with his loving family by his side. Oreo was born in Utuado, Puerto Rico on October 16, 1965, a son of Alicia (Cruz) Vélez of Wallingford and the late Luvidio Vélez, and had resided in New Haven for most of his life before moving to Wallingford six years ago. He is a retired custodian of many years at Yale University, and was an avid sports fan who loved the New England Patriots and Boston Red Sox.
In addition to his mother, Oreo is survived by three sons, Heroito Vélez of New Haven, Christopher Vélez of Yonkers, NY and Robert Vélez of Wallingford, two sisters, Carmen “Mimi” (Ray) Morales of Meriden and Virgen “Nana” (Patricia Warquist) of West Haven, five brothers, Peter (Lucy) Vélez of Texas, Wilson (Janet) Vélez of Waterbury, Daniel Vélez and Marcelino Vélez of Wallingford and Orlando (Nancy) Vélez of Phoenix, AZ, three grandchildren, many loving nieces and nephews, including Jayline and Jaya Malani Torres, Robert Torres, Henry “Chino” Reyes and Xjavier Vélez, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his brother Edwin Vélez.
Oreo’s family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, August 21st from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven. A funeral service will take place at the funeral home on Friday, August 22nd at 10:00 a.m., the Rev. Isaias Miranda officiating.
