Heckman-Charles Arthur

Charles Arthur Heckman passed away after a short illness in the presence of his loving wife on August 2, 2021. Born in Zanesville, OH to Harry and Dorothea (Splittgerber) Heckman, Charles was brought up in Western Springs, IL with his sister Carolyn (Heckman) Miller. After attending Brown University for his A.B. and one year graduate study in French, he was awarded a full academic scholarship to the University of Chicago School of Law where he was a managing editor in the Law Review. Charles went to teach law, specializing in Legal History and Commercial Law, at the University of North Dakota, University of Houston, Western New England University, Whittier Law School, and finally at Quinnipiac University in Connecticut, where he retired as Professor Emeritus and elected member of the American Law Institute. His studies in law were multidisciplinary and multinational, including helping to establish a legal course in Mexico while at the University of Houston and attending a yearly meeting of the European Society for Comparative Legal History. Charles was devoted to his family and enjoyed music, his Newfoundland dogs, bridge, crossword puzzles, and detective novels. He is survived by his wife of thirty eight years, Honor Heath, his daughter Elizabeth Heath-Heckman, sons Loren Heckman-Heath and Elias Heckman-Heath, adopted son Timothy Hanley, foster son Elias Treviño, grandchildren Arthur Heckman-Whitehorn and Alice Heckman-Whitehorn, son-in-law Nathan Whitehorn, and daughter-in-law Bridget Allison.
