Benedicta Martínez Sanchez, 86 of Clinton, formerly of New Haven died peacefully Friday, July 24, 2020 at Yale-New Haven Hospital, St. Raphael Campus with her loving family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Ismael Alicea. Benedicta was born in Manatí, Puerto Rico on February 19, 1934, a daughter of the late Benito Martínez and the late Agustina Sanchez, and had lived in New Haven for more than forty years before moving to Clinton three years ago. She had previously lived in the Bronx, NY for several years. She worked for U.S. Surgical in North Haven for nine years, retiring in 1998. Benedicta is survived by two daughters, Silvia Evelyn Torres and Alicia Negrón of New Haven, two sons, Ismael Alicea, Jr. of New Haven and Luís Martín (Gaetana) Torres of Clinton, four sisters, Flor Margarita Díaz and Frances Magali Rivera of Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, and Luz Selena Rivera and Carmen Rivera of New Haven, eighteen grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by two daughters, Lourdes Agustina Ayala and Nereida Baranowski, one brother, Santos Díaz, and a grandson, Victor Ayala. Benedicta's family will receive relatives and friends on Friday, July 31st from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Washington Memorial Funeral Home, 4 Washington Ave., North Haven.
