Arturo "Art" Enrique Mercado, 69, of West Haven, CT died peacefully on Thursday, October 17, 2024 at Yale-New Haven Hospital, St. Raphael Campus, surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of twenty three years to Jennie Lee (Chappell) Mercado. Art was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico on June 13, 1955, a son of Margarita Rodríguez of New Haven and the late Arturo E. Mercado, and his father who raised him, the late Cristino Obispo Rodríguez. Art resided in New Haven for many years before moving to West Haven twenty three years ago. He was a bus driver for both Dattco and Propark Bus Companies for the past ten years, a member of Promise Land Church of God, as well as a musician who played the trumpet at church.
In addition to his wife Jennie Lee, Art is survived by five sons, Jason (Yesmarie) Alvarado of Walingford, Antoine Davis of East Haven, J.B. (Kara) Smith of Woodbridge, Alex (Cassandra) Mercado of Orange and Michael Mercado of West Haven, five daughters, Cherie (John) Gildart of Plainfield, Crystal (Dmitry) Tananykin of Tarpon Springs, FL, Tricia (Martin) Alonso of Woodbridge, Brenda (Jonathan) Mercado of New Haven and Rosie Mercado of Arizona, one sister, Millie (Mike) McFarland of New Haven, two brothers, Caleb (Valerie) Rodríguez of West Haven and Josh (Lillian) Rodríguez of Hamden, brothers and sisters-in-law, Wayne (Natalie) Chappelle of Wallingford, Roy (Donna) Chappelle of North Haven, Jackie (Brian) Wilson of Alabama and Al Celotto of East Haven, nineteen grandchildren, multiple godchildren, his Savino girls in Florida, and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased his sister-in-law Theresa Celotto.
Arts's family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, October 28th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Promise Land Church of God, 240 Burwell Rd., West Haven. A funeral service will take place at the church on Tuesday, October 29th at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in All Saints Cemetery, North Haven.
